FAQs

What is the standard tip percentage?

In the United States, 15-20% is standard for sit-down restaurant service. 15% is acceptable, 18% is good, and 20% is great. For exceptional service or fine dining, 20-25% is appropriate. For counter service or takeout, 10% or a few dollars is common.

How do I calculate a 20% tip quickly?

Quick mental math: Move the decimal point one place left (divide by 10), then double it. Example: $50 bill → $5.00 (10%) → $10.00 (20%). Or use this calculator for instant results with any tip percentage!

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Traditionally, tips are calculated on the pre-tax amount (subtotal before tax). However, many people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity. Both are acceptable. This calculator works with whatever amount you enter as the bill.

How does bill splitting work?

Enter the number of people sharing the bill. The calculator divides the total amount (bill + tip) equally among everyone. It shows the amount per person and tip per person. Example: $100 bill + $20 tip = $120 total ÷ 4 people = $30 per person.

What if I want to leave a specific dollar amount as a tip?

Enter your bill amount, then calculate what percentage that dollar amount represents. For example, if you want to leave $10 on a $50 bill, that's 20%. You can also use the custom tip field to enter the exact percentage that gives you the dollar amount you want.

Should I tip on discounted bills?

Etiquette suggests tipping on the original price before discounts, especially if you used a coupon or gift card. Servers provide the same service regardless of discounts. However, tipping on the discounted amount is also common and acceptable.

What tip percentage should I use for delivery?

For food delivery, 15-20% is standard, with a minimum of $3-5 for small orders. Consider distance, weather, and order size. For bad weather or long distances, tip 20% or more. For grocery or large item delivery, $5-10 or 10-15% is typical.

Do I need to tip for takeout or pickup orders?

Tipping for takeout is optional but appreciated. 10% or a few dollars ($1-3) is common for takeout. If the restaurant packaged a large or complex order, or if you received exceptional service, consider tipping 10-15%.

What if the service was poor?

For poor service, 10% is acceptable. However, consider whether the issue was the server's fault or kitchen/management issues. If service was truly unacceptable, speak to a manager rather than leaving no tip, as servers often rely on tips for income.

Can I tip more than 25%?

Absolutely! You can enter any custom tip percentage. Tipping 25%+ is generous and appropriate for exceptional service, fine dining, or when you want to show extra appreciation. There's no maximum tip percentage.

Is my data secure?

Yes! All tip calculations happen entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your bill amounts and results never leave your device and are not sent to any server, ensuring complete privacy and security.
