FAQs

What is a favicon?

A favicon (favorite icon) is the small icon that appears in browser tabs, bookmarks, and address bars. It helps users identify your website at a glance and makes your site look more professional. Modern websites need multiple favicon sizes for different devices and contexts.

What sizes should I generate?

For most websites, use the Standard preset (16×16, 32×32, 48×48, 180×180, 192×192). This covers browser tabs, Apple devices, and Android. For PWAs and comprehensive coverage, use Complete preset which includes all 8 standard sizes including 512×512 for splash screens.

Should I use ICO or PNG format?

Use both! ICO format is best for browser compatibility (especially older browsers) and can contain multiple sizes in one file. PNG files are needed for Apple Touch Icons, Android Chrome, and PWAs. Our tool generates both formats for maximum compatibility.

What image should I upload?

Upload your logo or brand icon. Square images work best (1:1 aspect ratio). If your image isn't square, the tool will center-crop it. For best results, use a high-resolution image (at least 512×512px) with a simple, recognizable design that looks good at small sizes.

How do I add favicons to my website?

Place favicon.ico in your website's root directory. Then add these HTML tags in your <head> section: <link rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" href="/favicon.ico"> for browsers, <link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/favicon-180x180.png"> for Apple devices, and <link rel="icon" sizes="192x192" href="/favicon-192x192.png"> for Android.

Why do I need multiple sizes?

Different devices and contexts use different favicon sizes. Browser tabs use 16×16 or 32×32, Apple devices use 180×180, Android uses 192×192, and PWAs use 512×512 for splash screens. Providing multiple sizes ensures your icon looks crisp on all devices.

What's the difference between the presets?

Basic (3 sizes) covers browser tabs and Apple devices - good for simple websites. Standard (5 sizes) adds Android support - recommended for most websites. Complete (8 sizes) includes all sizes for PWAs, Windows tiles, and comprehensive platform support.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No! All image processing and favicon generation happens entirely in your browser using Canvas API. Your images never leave your device, ensuring complete privacy and security.

Can I use transparent backgrounds?

Yes! PNG files support transparency, which is perfect for favicons. However, ICO files may not display transparency correctly in all browsers. For best compatibility, consider using a solid background color or test your favicon in different browsers.
